Benjamin Domenec’s popular blog, “The Transom,” featured a tour of a luxury bomb shelter in a secret location. At a cost of $35,000 per place, the elite are planning to be able to live in comfort for a year after Doomsday.
Robert Vicino, founder and CEO of survival prep company the Vivos Group, ticked off a list of scenarios (financial collapse, pandemic, magnetic pole shift, collision with Planet X, nuclear war, etc.). He has been building survival bunkers since 2007.
At the time of the tour, the facility was unoccupied. It is not clear what will signal people to head for shelter—or how they will get there.
Psychologist Peter J. Behrens sees such “grand survival plans” as a “reflection of social and psychological maladjustment, the place where ‘paranoia meets narcissism.’” But some countries have similarly survivable though far from luxurious shelters for ordinary citizens, in well-known locations. These countries include Switzerland, Russia, and China.
The U.S., on the other hand, completely dismantled its civil defense program and depends on “just in time” supplies of essential food, fuel, and medical equipment.
“In 1964, the U.S. federal government maintained stockpiles capable of feeding the entire population for a period of three years,” states Barrett Moore, founder of the global security company Triple Canopy. “Some 50 years later, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has admitted to a stockpile of a mere six million meals.”
At a time of increasing perils, protection from the really big threats, such as a nuclear detonation, is “self help.”
“Our public officials and candidates need to recognize our state of vulnerability. It is irresponsible to risk provocation of nuclear-armed states in order to assert our pride,” states Jane Orient, M.D., president of Physicians for Civil Defense.
“The best-prepared one percent are wasting their $35,000 ticket if the 99 percent are lost. We need people who know how to grow food, make things, and keep equipment working.”
